The Reframing Imperial War project explores the work of Italo-British photographer Felice Beato (1832-1909).
Beato helped to shape Britain’s mid-Victorian imperial culture. His unflinching depictions of imperial violence are both imperialist triumphalism, and a grim reflection of the horrors of imperialism. This project explores Beato’s contribution to the visual vocabulary through which the conflicts of the British Empire were perceived and imagined.
