Description

Caption: "Exterior of TAKU NORTH FORT taken by storm Augst. 21st. 1860.
Shewing the Causeway along which the British Forces advanced and the point at which they obtained entrance. The bridge in the foreground over nearest ditch had been removed by the Chinese and the Drawbridge which is down in the picture was raised when the attack was made. Our troops had to cross both ditches, through water out of their depth, and strong tenacious mud. The "Abbatis" of felled trees on the right extended all along the front of the Fort, as did the rows of upright bamboo stakes at the foot of the rampart. The top of the rampart shows effect of Govan's G Pn. guns brought within 80 yards to destroy the cover of people who were annoying us on the left of the gate."
