Temple of Heaven - two contrasting prints

Beato's 1860 photograph of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing was widely reproduced and imitated. Two prints of this photograph are juxtaposed below.

The print held at the Getty (on the left) is an early positive produced when Beato's negative was still in good condition, but the print itself shows some damage.

The positive held at Queen's University Belfast (on the right) was printed later using a damaged glass plate negative.  The deterioration of the negative is particularly apparent in the sky, which appears smudged, but the print has survived well.

Juxtapose images may take some time to load.

Several prints of this photograph of the Temple of Heaven are included on this site, along with two different Beato photographs of the building.
